Best time to visit the Alcantara Gorges
Spring (April–June): the sweet spot
Mild days, clear skies, and manageable crowds. April and May are perfect. The water is cold (8–12°C) but the air is pleasant, the gorge is less busy, and tours operate smoothly. By June the crowds start picking up but are still reasonable.
Summer (July–August): hot and very crowded
Peak season. Temperatures can hit 30°C+, the sun on the canyon walls is intense, and the gorge fills with visitors. The water remains frigid (8–12°C year-round), so body rafting is still a shock. Rafting in August heat plus 8°C water is the contrast many seek. If you visit in summer, arrive early (8 AM) to beat the crowds, bring plenty of water, and wear sunscreen. Hotels and tours book out; reserve well ahead.
Autumn (September–October): nearly as ideal as spring
Late September and October are excellent. Temperatures are still warm but cooler than summer. Crowds thin out. The water is still cold (8–12°C) but many prefer rafting in late autumn when the air is crisp. This is when locals often visit.
Winter (November–March): possible but wet
Mild but damp. Rain can bring fog, which obscures views of the canyon walls. The water remains 8–12°C, so it is no less cold, just that the air is cooler and less pleasant for a paddle. Winter visits are possible if you hit a dry spell, but it is not ideal.
Water temperature all year
The gorge’s water is fed by cold springs and stays 8–12°C even in August. Wetsuits are provided for body rafting. A quick paddle (no raft) is shocking. See is the water cold for what to expect.
Rafting season
Body-rafting tours typically run May–October, depending on water levels and weather. Winter floods can close the river; spring snowmelt can raise levels. Most operators are most active June–September.
