Can you visit the Alcantara Gorges for free?

The municipal staircase gets you down to the canyon floor: a maintained path, a small river beach, and the basalt walls rising 25 metres over your head. You can wade a few steps in, take your photos and climb back up — a perfectly good hour. What it doesn’t get you is a wetsuit, a helmet or a guide, and in 8–12°C water that limits you to ankle depth for a few minutes.

If you’re coming all this way anyway
