How long to spend at the Alcantara Gorges

~1–1.5 hours is plenty for a standalone gorge visit: walk down (10–15 minutes), explore and paddle (20–30 minutes), walk back up (10–15 minutes). Body rafting takes ~2 hours plus setup. Full-day Etna+Alcantara tours give ~1 hour here as part of an 8-hour day.
Stairs + paddle~1–1.5 hours total
Body rafting~2 hours active time
Park + lift~1 hour total
Etna+Alcantara combo~1 hour at gorge + 3h Etna
Part of a bigger trip?Half day or add-on

Short visit (1 hour): descend the stairs or lift to the river, paddle or wade for 15 minutes, explore the canyon, walk back up. Done by lunch. Good if you are on a tight schedule.

Full visit (1.5 hours): take your time, wade into the river, find a quiet spot, eat a snack, climb back. This is the typical tourist experience.

Body rafting (2+ hours): include 30 minutes of setup/briefing, 1.5 hours active rafting, 15 minutes packing up. You will be wet and tired after.

Day trip with Etna (~8 hours): the gorge is the finale. Spend most time on Etna (craters, caves, lunch), arrive at the gorge around 3–4 PM, spend 45 min–1 hour there, return by 6–7 PM.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 hour enough time at the gorge?

Yes, if you just want to see the canyon and paddle briefly. Stairs down (10 min), paddle (15 min), stairs up (10 min) = roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour.

How long does body rafting take?

About 2 hours active time. Add 30 minutes for setup/briefing and 15 for packing up. You finish wet and tired.

Is the gorge worth a full day on its own?

Not really. 1.5 hours covers a thorough gorge visit. It is best combined with Etna (full-day combo, ~€97) or as part of a multi-site Sicily trip.
