Is the Alcantara Gorges water cold?

Yes, very cold. The water is 8–12°C year-round, fed by cold springs from deep aquifers. Even in August. A quick paddle is a shock; body rafting in a wetsuit is manageable; swimming is dangerous without a suit.

The Alcantara River’s water comes from deep springs in the limestone mountains and stays cold all year. Even on a 30°C summer day, the river is 8–12°C. This is not a casual swim. The shock of cold on first immersion can trigger gasping and temporary shock. Wetsuits (provided for body-rafting tours) insulate you and make 1.5–2 hour sessions manageable.

For a quick 5–10 minute paddle at the public stairs or park, accept the cold. Most people splash briefly and get out. For body rafting, the wetsuit makes all the difference.

Frequently asked questions

How cold is the water?

8–12°C all year. It is fed by deep cold springs. Even in August it is shocking cold, not a warm summer swim.

Can I swim in it?

Not safely without a wetsuit. The cold can trigger shock. A 5–10 minute paddle is fine; longer immersion needs a suit.

Why is it so cold?

The water comes from deep limestone aquifers in the mountains. It does not warm up seasonally like surface water.
