Why the gorge entry is almost free (but most people spend more)
The Alcantara Gorges sit in the Motta Camastra valley. If you drive there yourself, the public municipal staircase costs just €2 — you pay a teenager at a small booth, get a ticket, walk down 200 stairs into the gorge, see the basalt walls, paddle in the 8–12°C water, and leave. One to one-and-a-half hours, done. Free exit.
The alternative: the private Gole Alcantara Botanical & Geological Park charges €13 (or €10 in low season). That gets you access to their grounds, restrooms, and viewing platforms. The panoramic lift down the cliff is €8 extra. So: €13 for access, €2 for the municipal stairs. The lift if you don’t want to walk.
But here’s the thing: most visitors don’t have a car or the time to DIY the stairs. They book a tour instead. A body-rafting tour (€62–€63) solves the transport problem and gets you in the water for 1.5–2 hours, fighting the current with a guide. The Etna combo (€97) picks you up from Taormina, adds Mount Etna, lunch, and lava tunnels, then ends at the gorge. That’s why most people book a tour even though the stairs are €2.

The DIY option: driving yourself and the €2 stairs
If you have a rental car or are staying in Francavilla di Sicilia or nearby, you can drive straight to Motta Camastra. Park near the municipal staircase entrance, pay €2, descend, swim, and leave. That’s it. Cost is just €2 plus fuel. But you need: (1) your own car, (2) a sense of direction to find the parking, (3) time — you’re limited to the gorge alone, which is short. Most visitors flying into Palermo or Catania and heading straight to Taormina don’t have a car, so a tour with pickup is simpler.
Lunch and equipment
On the Etna combo tours, lunch is included at a local restaurant (usually pasta or meat with a view of the volcano). Body-rafting tours include a 5 mm wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, and water shoes. Bring a towel, bring water, bring snacks. The operator supplies the cold-water gear; you supply your own food and any extra layers.
