Alcantara River and Gorges: Body Rafting Experience — Review

What the tour is like
You meet at the Motta Camastra area of the gorge. After a brief safety talk, you enter the water in your wetsuit. The guide leads you upstream against the current, pushing and swimming. The basalt walls rise up on either side — 20–25 metres high, sometimes higher. You’re working hard; your heart is up. The water is cold but the suit keeps you warm. After maybe an hour of upstream effort, you turn around and float back downstream, relaxing.
What works
- Andrea, the main guide, is named in reviews as having everyone under control
- Full kit means you’re warm and safe; wetsuit is essential in water this cold
- 377+ reviews = consistency and real feedback from diverse swimmers
- This is the thrill — not a swim, but a genuine challenge
- Minimum height 1.30 m only; works for teenagers and adults
- Meets at the gorge; no long drive like the Etna tours
- May–October schedule fits most visitor plans
Worth knowing
- 8–12°C water is genuinely cold; don’t underestimate it
- You need good fitness and swimming confidence; it’s not leisurely
- ~2 hours sounds short; you’re working hard the whole time
- Not advised in pregnancy or with serious health issues
- No real scenic stops; it’s effort and motion the whole way
- Season is May–October only (river dependent)
Book this in June or September — the water is still cold but the air is warm. July–August water temps don’t change, but crowds peak and slots fill fast. Bring a towel and dry clothes; you’ll be soaked.
Who it’s for
Adults and teenagers who want a real challenge in the water. People who can swim and have basic fitness. Anyone staying in Taormina or the area without a car — the operator arranges how you get there.
Not for you if: you’re not a confident swimmer, have joint or heart issues, or are pregnant. For a gentler gorge experience, see the full Etna day which includes a calm gorge walk, or explore whether the gorge is worth it.

Frequently asked questions
How cold is 8–12°C really?
Cold enough that you need a 5mm wetsuit. Your skin would go numb without one in 10 minutes. With a suit, you can work hard for 2 hours comfortably. The suit is why this tour is safe and doable.
Can I do this if I’m not a strong swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in water and able to tread water. The life jacket helps, but you’re not floating passively; you’re moving upstream. Good fitness matters.
What if I get cold during the tour?
The guide monitors everyone. If you’re struggling, they slow the pace or shorten the upstream portion. Tell the guide immediately if you’re cold.
Is the water really 8–12°C even in August?
Yes. The Alcantara river is fed by cold springs deep underground. Summer air temps don’t warm it. That’s why it’s thrilling and why the wetsuit is essential.
How much do I actually move upstream?
Depends on the group. Maybe 30–45 minutes of upstream work. The guide reads the group’s fitness and adjusts. You float back at leisure.
